As 2008 unfolded we experienced a marked shift in terms of the nature of the M&A activity in Ireland. The value of acquisitions and disposals involving Irish companies, where the value of the deals was disclosed, fell by some 63%, the reduction in the actual number of deals however, was much less dramatic only down 4% year on year. Both the low rate of disclosures and the fall off in mega deals during the year goes a long way to explaining these contrasting figures.
